Shifting from Acclaim to Fury: Right-wing Reaction to Jeffrey Epstein File Release is Mixed.
Conservative responses to the partial release of documents related to the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some backers of the previous administration pointing out the noticeable appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while different voices lamented how extensive redactions cast former President Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Justice Department officials justified the heavily censored sections with fervent exaggerated language. “At no point in American the nation's history has a President or the Department of Justice been so open with the American people about such a sensitive law enforcement issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page memo describing the censorship process.
Concerns Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's identity and likeness are visible in portions of the documents, the widespread redactions raise serious concerns about the information may be concealed behind them. Some Republicans swiftly called for increased transparency.
“People are furious and disengaging,” wrote Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the law, and suggested that a future Congress may move to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, today’s file dump grossly does not adhere to both the intent and the letter of the law,” he added.
Some Rightwing Commentators Rally Behind the Release
However, a segment of rightwing commentators and Trump loyalists came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a DOJ led by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of documents that are completely redacted, and numerous of the individuals depicted in photographs have their faces obscured.
But some are not, including prominent individuals like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, allowed some rightwing figures to launch the attack.
“It’s quite ironic how the political left falsely accused President Trump of being a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a female that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one explanation Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a young woman in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Former President Campaign Releases Statement
Clinton has consistently stated he knew of zero illegal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration has not been hiding these files for months only to dump them late on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“The release is about protecting themselves from future revelations, or from what they will try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photos as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement concluded.
Overall Rightwing Comment Seems Subdued
However, overall comment on the right was comparatively muted after the disclosure, especially when compared with the loud demands for transparency that came before the congressional vote to pass a law requiring the documents' release.
Loomer, who recently accepted press credentials at the Pentagon, had been among the loudest advocates for a full release. Earlier this year, she criticized the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing influencers were provided physical folders of files that included little new information.
