This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

We present a test for partners in committed relationships who appreciate scary movies: Settle in with your loved one and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its streaming debut on Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like standard biological terror, but within Together resides a profound meditation about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for over ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The narrative starts when the couple relocate from the urban environment to the rural area for Millie’s job. A commonly used story element, sure, but that’s largely where the cliches conclude. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the two tumble into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a strange force takes hold of the couple. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past simple connection.

The entire film is a slow burn of scares, weaving in bits of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and far away from his support system. He is terrified of the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in his partner. This fear is intensified by the fact he can’t drive and needs Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in Together refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie grapple with the kind of problems that are inherent in any relationship over a long period. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these anxieties of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that single viewers have seen the movie as a strong argument for staying single. On the other hand, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply look at your partner and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu at present.
